Let me be straight with you from the start: as a personal trainer in Wilmslow I train my clients with real intensity.
Not boot camp intensity. Not endless sets until you can’t walk intensity. Controlled, focused, purposeful intensity, the kind that builds real muscle, burns real fat and delivers results that actually last. All while protecting your joints and keeping you training consistently for years to come.
If you’re looking for an easy ride, I’m probably not the trainer for you.
But if you’ve been putting the effort in and still not seeing the results you deserve, keep reading, because effort alone isn’t the full answer. And understanding why is the thing that changes everything.
What Genuine Intensity Actually Looks Like
That image above is me on the Hammer Strength leg curl at Total Fitness Wilmslow. That set was intense. My muscles were fully loaded, working through a complete range of motion, under controlled time under tension. Every rep counted. Nothing was wasted.
That’s what I mean by intensity. Not noise, not chaos, not grinding out set after set until your form falls apart. Focused, controlled effort, where every rep has a purpose and your muscles are genuinely being challenged throughout.
This is the kind of training that creates real change in the body. And it’s a very different thing from what most people are doing in the gym.
The Problem With How Most People Train
Most people’s version of intense training looks like this: lots of sets, lots of exercises, rushing between stations, lifting as heavy as possible with whatever form they can manage, leaving the gym exhausted and barely able to move the next day.
It feels productive. It isn’t.
When you’re over 40, that approach has two big problems. First, it increases injury risk significantly, and an injury sets you back weeks, sometimes months. Second, it doesn’t give your body the right stimulus for muscle growth and fat loss. Volume without control is just fatigue. And fatigue isn’t the same as progress.
My sessions as your personal trainer in Wilmslow are focused, demanding and structured. You’ll work harder with me than most people do training on their own for twice as long, because every exercise, every set, every rep is intentional.
Controlled Intensity — The Missing Piece
Here’s what most trainers don’t teach and most gym-goers never learn: the way you perform a rep matters as much as how much weight is on the bar.
Slowing down the lowering phase of a movement, the eccentric phase, increases the time your muscle spends under tension. That tension is what drives growth. Controlling the movement through a full range of motion ensures the right muscles are doing the work, not momentum or compensating joints.
This is what I mean by controlled intensity. You’re not going lighter and taking it easy. Every rep becomes more effective by doing it properly. Your muscles are working more, not less , and they’re doing it in a way that protects your joints and keeps you injury free.
That’s the standard in every session I run.
Showing up matters — But So Does What You Do When You’re There
Consistency is essential. Three to four structured sessions a week, week after week, is how results compound over time. Missing sessions, going weeks without training and then going all out to compensate, that cycle doesn’t work.
But showing up isn’t enough on its own. Showing up and going through the motions isn’t enough either.
What you need is to show up, train with real intensity, train correctly, and do it again. That combination, controlled intensity applied consistently, is what separates the people who see real, lasting results from the people who are always starting over.
What This Looks Like in Practice
When I design a programme for a client, I’m not thinking about how many exercises I can cram in or how spent I can make them feel. I’m thinking about which movements will create the most effective stimulus for their goals, how to sequence them properly, and how to progress them safely over time.
Each session has a clear structure. Controlled tempo on every rep. Enough rest between sets to perform the next one with full intensity, not so much that the effort drops off. Progressive overload built in week on week, so the body is always being challenged and never allowed to plateau.
No endless sets. No junk volume. No leaving the gym so beaten up you can’t train again for days.
Just focused, intense, purposeful training, done consistently.
Fuelling and Recovery — The Part Most People Overlook
Controlled, intense training creates the stimulus for change. But your body actually builds the muscle and burns the fat outside of the gym, and for that to happen properly, nutrition has to support it.
The two things I focus on most with my clients are protein and fuelling around training. Protein is what your muscles use to repair and grow after a session. Without enough of it, you’re training hard but giving your body nothing to build with. Most people over 40 are eating far less protein than they need, and it’s one of the first things we address.
Fuelling matters too. Under-eating might sound like a shortcut to fat loss but it backfires, your energy drops, your performance in the gym suffers, and your body starts holding on to fat rather than burning it. Eating the right things at the right times means you show up to every session ready to work, and recover properly afterwards so you’re ready to go again.
Training and nutrition aren’t two separate things. They work together, and when both are right, the results reflect it.
The Result
Clients who train this way build lean muscle they can see and feel. They get stronger week on week. Their body composition changes. Their energy improves. And because the training is structured and sustainable, they keep going, which is where the real transformation happens.
Over 40, this approach isn’t just more effective. It’s the only approach that makes sense long term.
